Den amerikanske gadekunstner Shepard Fairey, der især er kendt for sin Obey figur, bliver fejret med en udstilling på The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art i sin fødeby Charleston, South Carolina. På udstillingen viser Fairey malerier, skulpturer, papirarbejder og litografier. Desuden udsmykker han i forbindelse med udstillingen flere mure i midtbyen i Charleston.
Udstillingen tager udgangspunkt i Faireys ny serie "Power & Glory", der omtales på følgende måde:
""Power & Glory" is a celebration and critique of Americana with an emphasis on the meanings of power. Fossil fuels and their accompanying oil and gas iconography are explored as symbols of what literally and metaphorically drives America in ways both good and bad.”
Sideløbende med Faireys udstilling viser The Halsey Institute et udsnit af Jasper Johns 's grafiske værk. Jasper Johns regnes som en af samtidskunstens vigtigste figurer og kommer ligesom Fairey fra South Carolina. Værkerne på udstillingen er skabt i perioden fra 1982 og frem til 2012. Om værkerne siger udstillingens kurator Mark Sloan:
"With this selection I hope to demonstrate the process through which Jasper Johns recycles imagery and ideas within his work. Beginning with a 1982 print of a Savarin coffee can all the way through a 2012 series called Shrinky Dinks, 1-4. These works contain the graphic elements for which Johns’ work has become synonymous – flags, face/vase, targets, stars, and the pottery of George Ohr, to list a few."
Det er Shepard Faireys første større udstilling i sin fødeby, og udstillingen ledsages af et katalog på 116 sider. Desuden produceres der en film om udstillingen.
